Business

Course Aims

Learners should know and understand business concepts, business terminology, business objectives, the integrated nature of business activity and the impact of business on individuals and wider society. Learners will be able to apply knowledge and understanding to contemporary business issues and to different types of business in local, national and global contexts. They will have the ability to think commercially and creatively to demonstrate business acumen and draw on evidence to make informed business decisions.

Topics

Year 9 will be a foundation year where we will predominantly cover enterprise incorporating marketing, finances and the roles within a business.

In years 10 and 11 the focus shifts to covering the GCSE specification for this course and covers aspects including business concepts and the issues surrounding the activities of a business. Students will explore the purpose and role of a business from spotting an opportunity through to the growth of an established business. They will also look at the role of marketing, human resources, finance and operations.

Students will also explore how business responds to external influences, such as ethical and environmental considerations, the economic climate and globalisation, and the interdependent nature of business.

Assessment

Year 9 and Year 10 will see assessments taking place through classwork and end of term assessments. These assessments are designed to check understanding, help us identify gaps in learning and begin to teach the skills required for success in future examinations.

At the end of their studies in Year 11 students will be expected to complete two examinations:

  • Business 1 ( business activity, marketing and people); and
  • Business 2 ( operations, finance and influences on business)

Both are external examinations of 1 hr and 30 minutes and carry 50% of the total GCSE qualification. The first 15 questions of each examination are multiple choice. The remaining questions are then short and long answer based questions on business case studies.

After the Course

This qualification provides the ideal foundation for learners to progress to AS and A level Business or other areas of vocational study.

A qualification in Business will be particularly beneficial if you are interested in pursuing courses / careers in Business, Business Administration, Enterprise and Accounting, or teaching.
