Developing a lifelong love of Language and Literature is at the core of what we are trying to achieve in the English Department at Bishop Perowne. The department is staffed by experienced subject specialists who are driven to share their passion for our language and its greatest works. We feel that it is our responsibility to enable our students to communicate clearly and confidently in both written and spoken English. We strive to nurture and support our learners in a positive and mutually respectful environment where all are encouraged to thrive and flourish. Fundamentally, we want to inspire a love of reading and learning which lasts a lifetime.
During Key Stage 3, we introduce students to the power of the English Language through reading and writing. Students explore how texts are constructed and develop opinions on what they have read. We study a range of contemporary writers from Michael Murporgo to Mark Haddon, using literature to boost reading skills, improve literacy and develop analytical thought.
We follow AQA English Language and English Literature at GCSE. Both courses are 100% examination assessed. English Language Unit 1 is an exploration in Creative Reading and Writing. English Language Unit 2 explores Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives. Students will also complete a Spoken Language assignment to complement their English Language qualification. Our study of English Literature covers: a play by Shakespeare; a 19th Century novel; a modern text; and a collection of poetry.
