Mathematics

Our Department

The aims of the Mathematics department at Bishop Perowne C of E College are to enable students to:

  • develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts;
  • acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems;
  • reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions; and
  • comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

The mathematics department has eight dedicated classrooms, all of which are fitted with interactive whiteboards enabling a visual and interactive learning experience.

We have extensive specialist knowledge and experience throughout the department, which allows us to provide an engaging experience to our students.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3 students will master the fundamental skills required to build upon in KS4. We do this by broadening their mathematical skills and developing a deeper understanding of how mathematical concepts and procedures work. By exposing misconception early on, and encouraging students to use a higher level of mathematical language, students are able to gain a secure and long lasting understanding of the topics.

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4 we follow Edexcel Mathematics at GCSE. This course is designed to create confidence in students' knowledge and competencies by developing transferable skills for the future using everyday Mathematics. This course is 100% examination assessed, covering six key topics of:

  1. Number
  2. Algebra
  3. Ratio, proportion and rates of change
  4. Geometry and measures
  5. Probability
  6. Statistics
