Public Sector Equality Duty

The Equality Act 2010 replaced all existing equality legislation.  The Act put in place a number of duties for public bodies, including schools, to ensure that they have due regard to certain 'protected' characteristics.  The protected characteristics are age, gender reassignment, disability, race, religion or belief, gender, sexual orientation and pregnancy or maternity.

All public bodies and schools must have due regard to the need to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Foster good relation between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

The Governing board of Bishop Perowne CE College is committed to ensuring data collected regarding the characteristics in school of staff and students is used to set objectives that will improve the welfare of the School Community.

The Governing board produces a Public Sector Equality Duty Statement supplemented with annual objectives, in addition to Equality and Diversity Policies that reinforce these commitments. These can be found in in our Policies

  • Eliminating discrimination
  • Improving equality of opportunity for people with protected characteristics
  • Consulting and involving those affected by inequality in the decisions our school takes to promote equality and eliminate discrimination (affected people could include parents, pupils, staff and members of the local community)
