What They Do

Governors are appointed or elected by a number of bodies and groups including the Church, the local authority, the parents and the staff. Governors are representatives not delegates.

A brief explanation of the role of Governors is that they set the strategic direction and the policies of a school or college. They are accountable for the quality of education provided and the spending of public funding. They monitor to see that plans and policies are implemented.

It is not only the education of the children that the Governors have a responsibility for, various statutes have laid down legal responsibilities on governors and these fall under a number of general headings which include:

Standards

  • To ensure high educational standards in all that the College does

Equal Opportunities and Human Rights

  • Sex Discrimination/Gender Equality
  • Race Relations
  • Disability Act

  • Community Cohesion

Finance

  • Management of College Finances
  • Care and Maintenance of Premises
  • Value for Money

Staffing

The Governors of a Voluntary Aided School are responsible for:

  • Staffing Structure
  • Discipline and grievance procedures
  • Appointments
  • Performance Management
  • Upholding Employment Law

Curriculum and Assessment

  • Ensure a broad, balanced curriculum
  • Make sure the National Curriculum is followed
  • Ensure target setting is in place

Good Behaviour and Discipline

  • Set guidelines to ensure consistency
  • Play an appropriate role in exclusions process

Special Needs and Disability

  • Children with Special Needs must have them met in and out of the Classroom

Health and Safety

  • Monitor
  • Ensure that all regulations are followed

Insurance

  • Public Liability
  • Theft and Damage

Admissions

  • The Admissions Policy
  • Administrative arrangements in respect of the admissions and appeals process

Reports, Information and Communication with Parents

  • Governors monitor to ensure that parents have the information they need about the College and their children's progress
