To develop a lifelong love of language and literature is at the core of what we are trying to achieve in the English Department at Bishop Perowne. The department is staffed by experienced subject specialists who are driven to share their passion for our language and its greatest works. We feel that it is our responsibility to enable our students to communicate clearly and confidently in both written and spoken English. At its heart, English is one of the most pastoral subjects, and we strive to nurture and support our learners in a positive and mutually respectful environment where all are encouraged to thrive and flourish. Fundamentally, we want to inspire a love of learning which lasts a lifetime.
KS3: During Key Stage 3 , we endeavour to expose students to all the skills crucial at GCSE in an engaging and supportive environment. Students study a range of contemporary writers from Michael Murporgo to Mark Haddon. We introduce students to the power of the English Language through reading and writing.
KS4: We follow AQA English and English literature at GCSE. Both courses are 100% examination assessed. English Language Unit 1 is an exploration is Creative Reading and WRiting. English Language Unit 2 explores writers viewpoints and perspectives. Our study of English Literature covers Shakespeare, a 19th Century novel, a modern text and poetry.
