Literacy and Spelling

At Bishop Perowne we believe strong literacy skills and a love of reading open many doors in a student's future. Therefore, we work hard to give students the opportunities to read engaging books regularly.

Throughout years 7-9, students participate in the DEAR ( drop everything and read) programme. This ensures students read for 20 minutes everyday.

Teachers also read alongside the students to illustrate the importance we place on this activity. Also in years 7-9, students are part of the accelerated reader scheme, this is a nationally recognised programme that uses quizzes and a wide range of books to engage students with reading matter that is matched to both their ability and interests. Rewards and incentives are on offer for our most avid accelerated readers.

For students who need a little extra help with their reading and literacy, we provide a 'fast track base' where specialist teaching assistants use phonics, on line resources and small group teaching to increase reading ages rapidly.
